Karnataka Govt Bans Smoking In All State Offices

This policy, enforced through a circular by the DPAR, aims to protect employees' health and reduce exposure to secondhand smoke

The Karnataka government has issued a new directive banning all government employees from smoking cigarettes or using tobacco products within government office buildings and premises. This policy, enforced through a circular by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), aims to protect employees' health and reduce exposure to secondhand smoke.

The circular emphasises that disciplinary action will be taken against any employees found violating the ban, which includes not only smoking but also consuming products like gutka and paan masala on government premises. Warning signs will be displayed prominently in offices to reinforce the message.

This measure is in line with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, which prohibits tobacco use in public areas, and Rule 31 of the Karnataka State Civil Service (Conduct) Rules, 2021, which restricts the consumption of intoxicating substances in public spaces.
