Layoffs At John Deere To Impact 650 Workers

Many of John Deere's recent layoffs have focused on the production and precision agriculture areas

Recent layoffs at John Deere, which will impact at least 650 employees, underscore the current challenges facing the agriculture economy, according to industry experts.

The Iowa Workforce Development website reports that the John Deere facility in Waterloo will be laying off 192 employees effective June 21. This follows earlier layoffs of 123 employees at three Iowa facilities on June 6.

In late April and early May, John Deere laid off 90 employees in Iowa, and 368 employees were laid off in April at the Waterloo and Des Moines plants.

These layoffs follow CNH Industrial’s decision to lay off 200 workers at its Racine, Wisconsin, plant in April.

Many of John Deere's recent layoffs have focused on the production and precision agriculture areas. According to the Des Moines Register, net sales in Deere’s production and precision agriculture segments decreased by more than $6 billion compared to the same period last year, prompting the manufacturer to reduce production.
