Driving Team Success

BW People Exceptional Managers Awards 2024 (Exceptional Finance Manager) winner interview with Ronit Dutta, Director and Head - Deal Evaluation & Pricing, HCLTech Americas

Ronit Dutta, Director and Head - Deal Evaluation & Pricing, HCLTech Americas, emphasises a blend of internal and external leadership qualities as pivotal to leadership in today's dynamic landscape. Internal qualities such as nimbleness, empathy and resilience are crucial. These qualities enable leaders to adapt swiftly to changing business environments, build strong interpersonal connections within teams and navigate challenges with fortitude.

Complementing these are external leadership qualities — managing ambiguity, effectively communicating vision and maintaining keen external awareness. Leaders who can manage uncertainty, articulate a compelling vision and integrate external insights effectively set themselves apart, driving their teams towards excellence.

“Becoming a great leader is not only about possessing certain qualities or possessing the same qualities at all times. It’s a journey, a process, one that thrives on accepting challenges, seeking feedback, leveraging relationships and enhancing knowledge,” he comments.

Creating meaningful outcomes

Reflecting on his career, Dutta underscores the importance of clarity of intent, sincere action towards goals and creating positive impacts for people and society. He highlights how aligning these principles can lead to meaningful outcomes and inspire teams to perform at their best.

Dutta shares, “Right leadership inspires right outcome. The lesson learnt through my career is the triangulation of 3 philosophies which are clarity of intent, focus on sincere actions to achieve the intent and creation of broad-based positive impact to people and society.”

Building sustainable team success

Balancing empathy and accountability is critical for sustainable team success, according to Dutta. He advocates for empowering team members through delegation, growth opportunities and recognition. Clear communication and setting expectations help foster a culture where accountability complements empathy, ensuring that teams feel supported while striving towards common goals.

Advice for aspiring leaders

Dutta acknowledges the challenges he has faced, including navigating ambiguity and managing radical changes. His advice to aspiring leaders centres on caring for their teams, embracing change with courage and balancing economic progress with broader societal impacts. Self-awareness and a vision for a better future are also crucial, fostering resilience and innovation in leadership.

“Living in ambiguity and managing radical changes in adverse situations is part of every leader’s journey and mine is no different. Delving on the obstacles would only exaggerate the past, which though meaningful - still rests in the past,” he notes.

By embodying qualities of adaptability, empathy and a focus on both internal and external dynamics, leaders can navigate complexities and inspire teams to achieve excellence in today's evolving business environment.
