In a historic move, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has unveiled a pioneering social welfare and recruitment programme aimed at integrating the transgender community into public service. This initiative, a first for India and globally unique, seeks to empower transgender individuals by offering them roles in traffic management across Hyderabad.
During a review meeting focused on the city's development and maintenance, CM Revanth Reddy proposed recruiting transgender volunteers to assist in regulating traffic within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. Currently, Home Guards assist traffic police, and this new initiative will extend similar opportunities to the transgender community.
The CM suggested providing volunteers with a stipend and special training to prepare them for the role. Additionally, they will be given uniforms, further integrating them into the city's official traffic management system.
This progressive initiative highlights innovative governance, addressing both employment and inclusivity for marginalised communities. Hyderabad, which already boasts fewer traffic challenges compared to other major Indian cities, continues to lead with thoughtful solutions.
Earlier this year, the Cyberabad Police, in partnership with IT companies, launched the 'Traffic Marshals' initiative, where volunteers ensure smooth traffic flow, particularly in the IT corridor.
