Tamil Nadu Police Detains 600 Samsung Workers Amid Protests

The workers, who are demanding higher wages and union recognition, were detained after a protest march disrupted public activities

Nearly 600 workers from Samsung Electronics have been detained by the Tamil Nadu Police after protesting for almost a month at the company's Sriperumbudur plant near Chennai. The workers, who are demanding higher wages and union recognition, were detained after a protest march disrupted public activities. Earlier, on 16 September, police detained 104 workers for a day under similar circumstances.

Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has intervened, urging Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to resolve the ongoing strike swiftly. Samsung, in response, warned that the protesting workers risk losing their jobs. The company has previously stated that its employees at the Sriperumbudur plant earn nearly double the average wages of comparable workers in the region.
