Intel Israel Announces Major Layoffs After Holiday Period

Intel has advanced to the next step following the voluntary retirement stage, which permitted Intel employees to depart and collect a bonus of up to 19 salaries. 

In August, Intel revealed that it would be laying off 15% of its workforce, or between 15,000 and 17,000 people.
The majority of the reductions would come from layoffs and voluntary retirement rather than replacing departing personnel.

Intel is already ramping up its downsizing. The US semiconductor manufacturer has advanced to the next phase following the voluntary retirement stage, which permitted Intel employees to depart and receive a bonus of up to 19 salaries.

The US media state that on Tuesday, Intel started letting go of over 2,255 workers in Oregon, Arizona, Texas, and California. The layoffs in Israel are scheduled to start after the holidays and will probably affect a few hundred of the 11,000 workers in Haifa, Petah Tikva, Jerusalem, and Kiryat Gat. 

The country's labour regulations require early notice when mass layoffs are involved, therefore 30 days' notice was given before the dismissals were carried out.

At least 7,500 employees will be laid off between mid-October and mid-November if reports from the US are to be believed. As of the beginning of October, 7,500 staff had reportedly enrolled in voluntary retirement plans.
