Hence, Anita Christopher – Associate Director, Human Resources - Talent Development, Samsung Semiconductor India R&D Center got in association with BW People's journalist to instill a greater insight onto how has she been managing her people upon this aspect since the onset of pandemic, until now.

  1. Do you see a rise in millennial and Gen-Z, job applicants towards R&D and Semiconductor industry?

The high-tech industry has always attracted a niche set of engineers - and that continues to be the case. Perhaps, with the semiconductor industry making waves today with the now-famous chip shortage, many curious Gen Z-ers may be casting a curious eye at this space. Today, the semiconductor industry is driving innovation across industries. Connect with academia is also creating more awareness on the opportunities and impact of this industry among students. And this is also a financially lucrative career - so we are surely going to see a spike in interest going forward. 

2. What general expectations do millennials and Gen-Z have from their job profiles? How does SSIR cater to it?

At SSIR, our key attraction is the quality of work, mentoring from experts and also opportunities for campus engineers to innovate by participating in research forums and file patents. The importance of this factor is reinforced by the feedback we get from our new campus graduates. Though there are slight differences in the expectations from millennials vs Gen Z ers, flexible hours, great pay and a good work environment are key factors to attract these groups. SSIR has been taking steady steps towards a hybrid workplace that can cater to this need. 3. What opportunities does the internship program open for the freshers and Gen-Z at SSIR?     

Our internship opportunities over both Summer / Winter or longer-tenured terms allow students to work on real-time projects and get a flavour of the kind of work that happens at SSIR. They also understand product goals and get to work under the mentorship of some of the industry's best technical experts who share their in-depth knowledge and experience with them. In addition, we provide behavioral learning opportunities, a good dose of fun events and a platform to connect with other interns and leaders in different teams. Interns walk away with a grounding on what it takes to work together as a team on challenging projects. 

4. What are the induction and training programs arranged for upskilling the digital-savvy generation?  

SSIR through its flagship SPARK program has designed a well-structured orientation for our campus hires to get well integrated with the organization. The program is designed to help them understand about industry, SSIR's growth, innovation across domains and opportunities ahead. It also helps enhance the theoretical as well as practical knowledge of the new college graduates. We follow a hybrid training model - access is given to the online learning platform and virtual labs to take up the courses as per the learner's convenience. This is augmented by live sessions from our internal & external subject matter experts. We also have sessions that help them transition successfully from the campus to a corporate environment.

·         Millennials & Gen – Z are more tech-savvy. Thanks to the Internet, they have a wide variety of interests. They like customized, tailor-made experiences and that flows over to the kind of products they build too.

·         They are open to taking risks and keep us young by challenging the traditional ways of doing things.

7. What are the projects led by the millennial workforce at SSIR? Highlight their early achievements. 

Our millennials are an integral part of the wide variety of projects that happen at SSIR. We try to map them to their areas of interest, so you'll find them making an impact across every area of hardware and software that we work in - be it building best-in-class mobile phone cameras or SSDs or automotive solutions!

8. Why is a majority of the young workforce opting for research and development-related job profiles? What is their scope for personal and professional development?  

Being in R&D is a dream for nearly any engineer, as one gets to help create new products that one can touch and feel. The products that our teams work on are an integral part of people’s lives. And our young engineers consider it a matter of great pride to be able to say they had a role to play in making them! For talented, ambitious young engineers, the sky is the limit when it comes to their development. Working through the highs and lows to deliver top-notch products within tight timelines to our internal and external clients is no mean feat - and these experiences contribute to both the personal growth and professional development of our engineers. As we like to say, there is never a dull day at work in SSIR.
