“I Was Forced To Leave Home, Upon COMING OUT”

In an exclusive interaction with BW People publication, Atharva Chaudhary , Senior Analyst – Global Business Services, Walmart Global Tech Is thankful to his organisation for providing with clear guidance on how to navigate the various formalities along with a roadmap of what to expect

1.    How did your organisation initially respond when you disclosed your intention to transition?
I grew up as a girl in a small town in Uttar Pradesh and struggled with my identity throughout my childhood. When I gathered the courage to come out to my family, there was resistance and I was compelled to leave home.
However, the persistent desire to transition to my true identity was always on top of my mind. When I joined Walmart, I found hope. The culture of belonging and the wide range of inclusive policies (such as coverage for gender reassignment surgeries) helped me convert my dream into a reality. I shared my feelings with my leaders who were incredibly supportive. Most importantly, they communicated an encouraging attitude for my need to make a transition because I was not comfortable in my own skin. Not only were they empathetic but they also provided practical advice so I could navigate this crucial journey.

2.    Were there any formal policies regarding gender transition in your workplace? Did the organisation provide clear guidelines or a roadmap to help you understand what to expect during your transition? If yes then how?
Walmart’s inclusive benefits and policies recognize the needs of diverse individuals and families. They empower associates at every life stage—regardless of their gender or orientation. The health insurance coverage supports gender reaffirmation surgeries which gave me the strength to embark on this journey. The coverage was comprehensive; it not only covered the surgery but also supported follow-up consultations and outpatient department visits. My colleagues from the People team spent a lot of time helping me understand the process and addressing all my queries. I was provided with clear guidance on how to navigate the various formalities along with a roadmap of what to expect. I also found comfort in Walmart’s positive work culture that encourages self-recognition and acceptance. I feel grateful for working in a safe environment where I am respected for my individuality, without any discrimination. The Pride Associate Resource Group (ARG) sensitizes associates to better appreciate the needs of our diverse workforce and create an inclusive workplace.

3.    How did your colleagues and supervisors react to your transition? Was the work environment supportive? Were there any challenges or difficulties you faced with coworkers, and how were they addressed? Share some anecdotes.
From the very start, I was transparent about my sexuality. I am fortunate to have wonderful colleagues at Walmart who have stood by me throughout my journey. Initially, I often wondered if people would feel uncomfortable and shy away from discussing these matters. However, it was important for me to be authentic and find acceptance for who I am. And so, I took the initiative to start conversations and urged everyone to freely ask me questions, without any reservations. In fact, one of my colleagues was unaware of what LGBTQ meant. I spent time explaining the spectrum and emphasizing the importance of accepting all individuals, regardless of their gender or orientation. His genuine curiosity and positivity made the conversation very meaningful. It was a moment that underscored the importance of openness and mutual respect.

4.    How did the organisation's support (or lack thereof) affect your overall well-being and job performance during your transition? Can you share any specific moments or actions by the organisation that made a significant positive difference for you?
Joining Walmart was a turning point in my life. While the healthcare coverage played a crucial role in my transition, I would not have been able to power through without the unwavering support of my leaders and colleagues. Undergoing a gender reassignment surgery requires a great deal of emotional resilience. I was lucky to find tremendous strength in my colleagues. During my transition, my managers helped me plan my time off from work and empowered me with flexibility. My teammates constantly assured me that I could count on them for anything and offered to step in in case I needed rest during the transition.
The surgery marked a new beginning in my life. Before the procedure, my confidence was at its lowest. But once I pulled through, I felt like I could finally stand tall with my chin up. I shared a few photos with my leader. She instantly recognized the transformation and my new-found positivity. Her response made me realize the extent of my personal growth. I cherish this journey and the wonderful people who had my back along the way.

5.    How do you feel about the organisation's commitment to diversity and inclusion after your experience? What advice would you give to other employees in your organization who might be considering or starting their transition journey?
I believe that Walmart’s commitment to fostering belonging is not just a policy, but the foundation of its culture. All associates are encouraged to bring their authentic self to work and my journey is a testament to this philosophy. After the transition, I discussed my experience with several friends and colleagues in the industry. They admired Walmart’s inclusive culture and considered me fortunate to be working for such a progressive organization.

For anyone at Walmart contemplating a transition, rest assured there is always support. The Pride ARG will lend an ear at any point in time and assist you through all the resources within the organization. Remember, you are not alone and there is always somebody who will stand with you at every step of the way.
