Siemens may be reducing its global workforce by up to 5,000 employees within its factory automation division, according to CEO Roland Busch. The announcement follows a significant 46 per cent decline in profit within Siemens' core digital industries business. Busch cited unexpected challenges in certain areas, stating that the company needs to "re-engineer" to adapt to the slower-than-anticipated developments.
Although Siemens employs around 70,000 people in its digital industries division worldwide, the anticipated layoffs are expected to impact a "low- to medium-sized four-digit" number of jobs. Despite these immediate challenges, Busch emphasised the long-term growth potential in factory automation, noting demographic shifts and low mechanization rates among small and medium-sized businesses as future opportunities.
