Transgenders To Don Police Uniform In State

It’s time for the third gender to don the police uniform and make formal entry into the police force. The state government has given its nod to the recruitment of transgenders, who have been added on the list of the Schedule (2) of the backward classes and their appointment will be done under the reserved category.

As per the decision of the state government, the transgenders will be appointed as constables and sub-inspectors. The notification issued by the general administration department says that a transgender will be appointed for every 500 posts of sub-inspector and constable. The recruitment will improve the police-public relationship at the national level, it said.

Amir Subhani, the chief secretary, chaired a meeting on Saturday in which a decision was taken on the recruitment of members of the third gender in the police force. The decision came in the backdrop of a 2014 resolution of the general administration department. Additional chief secretary Chaitanya Prasad, home department secretary Senthil Kumar and other senior officers were present at the meeting.

Initially, the state government will recruit 41 constables and 10 sub-inspectors from the transgender community. People of the transgender community, who wish to serve the Bihar police, will have to present a certificate confirming their gender and residential certificate to show that they are the natives of Bihar. The physical eligibility test standard for third gender will be equivalent to those for recruitment of women.

The decision has brought cheers to the transgenders, who will not only get the medium of their livelihood but also a respectable job that comes with great responsibility. Muskan Kumari (32) welcomed the state government’s decision saying that it will help to improve their status in the society. Another transgender, Aadika Choudhary, said, “Since we have gone through many struggles, we know how to deal with situations. We will try our best to maintain law and order in the state if given an opportunity.”

Riya Choudhary, a transgender, said, “We will now get the proper platform to prove our mettle. I am sure that we will rise to the expectations of the police department and perform our duties diligently.”
