ByteDance-owned social media giant TikTok is cutting hundreds of jobs from its global workforce, including a significant portion in Malaysia, as part of its transition to a more AI-driven content moderation model. The company confirmed these layoffs on Friday, with sources revealing that more than 700 employees in Malaysia were impacted. However, TikTok later clarified that the number of affected staff in Malaysia was fewer than 500.
The layoffs primarily targeted employees involved in content moderation, with most workers informed via email on Wednesday. The company stated that these changes are part of a broader strategy to improve its moderation processes, which currently employ a combination of AI technology and human reviewers to monitor content.
TikTok's spokesperson said the decision reflects their ongoing efforts to optimise their global operating model for content moderation, a move aimed at boosting efficiency as the platform grows.
