Spotify Sticks To Work-From-Anywhere As Big Tech Debates Office Returns

Katarina Berg, Spotify’s CHRO, believes in offering employees freedom and autonomy, says, "You can’t spend a lot of time hiring grown-ups and then treat them like children"

As major tech companies remain divided on their work-from-office policies, Spotify continues to embrace a more flexible approach with its "Work From Anywhere" (WFA) model. While companies like Apple and Google have implemented hybrid models requiring employees to come to the office three days a week, Amazon has mandated a full return to the office starting 25 January. However, Spotify is sticking to its flexible work philosophy.

Katarina Berg, Spotify’s Chief Human Resources Officer, believes in offering employees freedom and autonomy. "You can’t spend a lot of time hiring grown-ups and then treat them like children," she said in an interview. According to Berg, Spotify, being a digital-first company, sees no reason to impose mandatory office work, allowing employees the flexibility to work from anywhere.

Despite the flexibility, Spotify retains physical offices for employees who prefer working in-person. The company also encourages teams to meet in person during a "core week" for collaboration and face-to-face interaction, which Berg acknowledges offers a different dynamic compared to virtual meetings.
