Hyundai Motor & Union Agree To Hire 1,100 New Workers By 2026

The union advocated for increased hiring due to the annual retirement of around 2,000 workers and the upcoming launch of a new electric car factory in Ulsan

Hyundai Motor and its labor union have reached an agreement to hire 1,100 new manufacturing employees by 2026. This decision was finalised during the 10th round of negotiations focused on wages and working conditions at Hyundai’s plant in Ulsan, located 299 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

Initially, both parties had agreed to hire 300 new workers next year. The latest agreement includes an additional 500 employees in 2024 and 300 more in 2026. The union advocated for increased hiring due to the annual retirement of around 2,000 workers and the upcoming launch of a new electric car factory in Ulsan.

Earlier in the week, nearly 90 per cent of union members voted in favor of a strike after wage negotiations stalled. However, the union has not yet decided to proceed with the strike, which would be the first in six years. Previously, the union had refrained from striking for five years, considering factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and national trade issues.
