Government Of India To Extend Social Security To Gig & Platform Workers

Union Minister for Labour & Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, announced that the government is actively developing a comprehensive strategy to ensure that gig and platform workers are covered under various social security schemes

Union Minister for Labour & Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasised the government's dedication during a review meeting held in New Delhi today.

Comprehensive Strategy for Social Security

Mandaviya announced that the government is actively developing a comprehensive strategy to ensure that gig and platform workers are covered under various social security schemes. "Our government is fully committed to the well-being of gig and platform workers, who form a crucial part of our workforce," the Minister stated, highlighting the importance of these workers in the current economic landscape.

Registration on eShram Portal

As part of the strategy, the registration of gig and platform workers on the eShram Portal will be a key initiative. This portal is designed to facilitate the smooth implementation of social security measures. Mandaviya noted that companies employing gig and platform workers, referred to as aggregators, will be encouraged to take the lead in registering their workforce. An online window will be provided to ensure an efficient registration process, making it easier for these workers to access the benefits they are entitled to.

Recognition Under the Code on Social Security

One of the landmark aspects of this initiative is the recognition of gig and platform workers under the Code on Social Security. This code, which defines these workers for the first time in Indian law, represents a significant step towards formalising their roles in the economy. "This is a significant step towards acknowledging and formalizing the roles of gig and platform workers within our economy," Mandaviya emphasised.

Commitment to Inclusive Growth

Mandaviya reiterated the government's broader commitment to inclusive growth, ensuring that all sections of the workforce are empowered and protected. "We are determined to ensure that every worker in India, irrespective of their employment status, is granted the right to social security," he affirmed.

The Ministry of Labour & Employment is collaborating closely with stakeholders to craft a robust framework that aligns with the evolving nature of work, providing adequate protection and benefits to gig and platform workers.
