General Motors (GM), a car manufacturer, has announced further layoffs at its Fairfax Assembly factory in Kansas. According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) that was submitted earlier this week states that starting in November, 1,695 people will gradually lose their jobs. According to reports, the action is a component of GM's wider plan to simplify operations and adapt to shifting market dynamics.
Reports by Reuters states that, the layoffs will take place in two phases. The first phase, which is scheduled to start on November 18, will impact 936 employees. Of them, 250 temporary workers will have their contracts terminated and 686 full-time employees will be temporarily laid off. The workers at the plant should feel the effects of this phase right away.
And, the second phase will commence on January 12 next year, with an additional 759 full-time employees facing temporary layoffs, of which the company has not yet provided any further details regarding the specifics of this round.
A number of former GM employees shared their layoff experiences on social media platforms like X and LinkedIn.
Earlier, in August this year, GM also revealed plans to lay off over 1,000 salaried employees across its global software and service units. Even though the company's US operations are the main target of these layoffs, the restructuring will effect jobs all over the world.
