Engineering Professor Quits After 10 Years, Cites Frustration Over Salary Stagnation

Despite receiving excellent feedback from students and making personal sacrifices—such as covering competition fees out of his own pocket and working long hours—the professor's requests for a salary increase were consistently ignored

A 37-year-old assistant professor from an engineering college in East Bengaluru has resigned after a decade of service, expressing frustration over the absence of a salary hike. The former professor, who shared his experience on Reddit under the username "SquashImmediate6693," voiced his disappointment, stating that "honesty and loyalty have no meaning in this world."

In his post, the professor revealed that he had attempted to address his concerns with the principal before resigning. However, the principal refused to discuss the matter without the presence of the head of department (HOD). The professor noted that things began to change in 2019 when a new principal took charge, leading to the closure of three branches within the college.

Despite receiving excellent feedback from students and making personal sacrifices—such as covering competition fees out of his own pocket and working long hours—the professor's requests for a salary increase were consistently ignored. He lamented that even junior staff were being paid more than him.

The professor also disclosed that his salary structure had been altered, resulting in a reduction in dearness allowance (DA) from 115 per cent to 30 per cent, which significantly decreased his gratuity by at least 50 per cent. Additionally, he mentioned that he had not received any Employee Provident Fund (EPF) payments.

The final straw came when the principal insisted on the HOD’s presence to discuss the professor’s grievances. The HOD, according to the professor, favored certain faculty members while assigning difficult tasks to others, including him. Feeling undervalued and unsupported, the professor decided to resign.

“Nobody asked why I was resigning, and nobody asked me to stay,” he remarked in his post.

Since being shared on Monday, the post has garnered over 1,200 upvotes, with many users expressing their support for the professor and urging him to reveal the names of the college and the principal involved.
