Amidst a wave of layoffs across the automotive industry, Audi, owned by Volkswagen, has announced a major workforce reduction, planning to cut 15 per cent of its staff in a cost-saving initiative. This follows similar downsizing by its parent company Volkswagen, as well as by Nissan and Stellantis. The cuts are set to impact thousands of Audi’s “indirect” roles, including those in development, while safeguarding core manufacturing jobs.
According to media reports, Audi aims to reduce its workforce by around 6,500 positions, with 2,000 roles affected in development alone. Volkswagen has also announced the closure of several plants in Germany for the first time in its history, impacting tens of thousands of jobs across the group. The company further confirmed it will close Audi's Brussels plant, ceasing production of the low-demand Audi Q8 E-Tron electric SUV by February 2025, leading to an additional 3,000 job losses.
While Audi remains in discussions with employee representatives, specifics regarding the layoff numbers have yet to be confirmed by the company.
