Dhruv Loya, a recent graduate in Biomedical Engineering from the University at Buffalo (UB), has achieved his career goal of landing a position at Tesla following a determined five-month job search. Originally from Pune, India, Loya shared his journey on LinkedIn, detailing the challenges he faced and the strategies he used to overcome them. His post has since resonated with many who are navigating similar job market struggles.
“I finally got a job!” Loya posted enthusiastically on LinkedIn. He revealed that his search involved submitting over 300 job applications, sending more than 500 cold emails, and participating in 10 interviews before he secured the position of Powerwall Technical Support Specialist at Tesla. Despite a strong academic record, internships, and a range of extracurricular activities—such as rowing and winning a dance competition at UB—he endured a tough stretch of unemployment.
The challenges took a toll. Loya lost his apartment lease and health insurance and faced uncertainty around his visa status, which added to the pressures of his search. He shared that, during this time, he often relied on the generosity of friends, sleeping on their sofas and air mattresses.
Despite these setbacks, Loya approached his search strategically, treating it like a full-time commitment. He dedicated his weekdays to job applications and maintained his mental health by reserving evenings and weekends for relaxation. Online platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake, and Jobright.ai became crucial resources, while tools like Hunter.io helped him with cold emailing and ChatGPT+ assisted with refining his resume and cover letters. Loya’s resilience, positivity, and structured approach ultimately paid off, and he is now settled in New York, excited to start his career at Tesla.
