In the first edition of BW Hotelier- Hospitality Education and HR Summit 2018, professionals from Hospitality and HR industry shared their insights in a panel discussion, about the HR practices and how far behind is the Hospitality Sector.
The discussion began with the general issues that the companies are facing today when it comes to employee retention.
While the first phase of discussion had taken a turn over to work life balance, performance and management Alexander R mentioned, HR Director Oracle India expressed that the organization must provide work life balance to the employees and give them finite work. “Indian managers try to over manage and under lead,” he quoted.
Ritu Verma, Area Director HR, Marriot International expressed her idea saying “Retention happens only when we keep promised made to out associates. Positive working culture is important in this industry for employee empowerment and retention.”
The panel moderator Jaideep Anand, GM, The Leela Ambience focused the discussion mostly on work life balance. And how it has been taken for granted in the Hospitality sector. To this both Samir Kukreja, Founder& CEO, Tasanaya Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. and Verma shared a common opinion.
“Youngsters are willing to work more and harder as they are ambitious, and we need to maintain that by motivating and reminding them that there is no end to success” Kukreja said.
“ The priorities are different at every point of your life at every age and helping the associates with that creates a healthy relationship in the organization,” Ritu added
When asked about the employee quality and attrition rate Raj Rana who is the CEO, South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group stated that they support and polish the good performing employees and make them better for the organization and themselves.
Alexander further stated that it is important to respectfully weed out the bad performers who might turn out as a liability for the company and re direct them on a different career path to retain the quality of their employees.
The Hospitality sector has been flourishing rapidly both in the country and internationally but when asked about the employee satisfaction in the same sector Navneet Rattan, Director, Rewards and performance commented that there is the highest employee satisfaction in hospitality sector. Whereas, Raj Rana had a different opinion and said that he feels that people in Indian hospitality sector have to work for over 12 hours to mark their input for the organization.
Towards the end of the panel discussion Rattan quoted that “Hiring is the conversation between two liars.” To which the Panel Moderator replied in contradiction and in defense of the employers that sometimes the organization might exaggerate to create an image of the company in front of a potential employee, but you cannot call it lying.
