Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced significant new benefits for women police officers in the state, granting them a year of maternity leave. Upon returning to work, they will be posted at a location of their choice for three years to better nurture their children. This decision, announced on Friday, underscores the government's commitment to supporting women in the police force as they balance their professional duties with motherhood.
This new policy is an extension of the DMK government's efforts to enhance maternity benefits for its employees. After coming to power in 2021, the government increased the maternity leave period from nine months to one year for all state employees. The extension of this benefit to women police officers comes in response to requests from within the police department.
"Women police will be given one-year maternity leave, and after returning to work, they will be posted either at the place of their husband or parents for three years, to take care of their children," Chief Minister Stalin announced, highlighting the importance of supporting working mothers in the police force.
In addition to the maternity leave and flexible posting benefits, the Chief Minister emphasised the need to enhance the professional skills of women police officers. He pointed out that improving their capabilities to tackle crimes against women and children, as well as cybercrimes, is essential. "Your duty and responsibility is very huge. You must protect the people. Discharge your duties with dedication and serve not only to reduce crimes but also to prevent crimes," he urged the officers.
