India's Evolving Landscape Of Employment & AI In The Country

The report indicates a stark difference in perceptions of AI across countries

In the latest Global Workforce of the Future Report 2024 by The Adecco Group, significant findings reveal the evolving landscape of employment in India and its relationship with artificial intelligence (AI). The report highlights critical statistics about job security, readiness for future challenges, training preferences, and the impact of AI on productivity and employee well-being.

The report indicates a stark difference in perceptions of AI across countries. A notable 37% of Indian workers express concern that AI has led to job losses, a significant contrast to Japan, where only 4% share this sentiment. This discrepancy underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to mitigate the fears surrounding AI's integration into the workforce. Despite these concerns, India emerges as a leader in cultivating a future-ready workforce. A substantial 35% of Indian workers identify themselves as future-ready, significantly ahead of Japan, which stands at just 2%. This proactive approach reflects the willingness of Indian professionals to adapt to new technologies and work environments. Furthermore, the report reveals that 97% of India’s future-ready workers feel supported by their employers in developing personalized career paths, ranking India third globally in this regard. This focus on individual development is crucial for fostering a skilled workforce that can thrive in an AI-driven economy. India also ranks second in the percentage of workers participating in training focused on soft and leadership skills, with 98% affirming that they regularly engage in such training provided by their employers. Sweden leads with 99%. This emphasis on upskilling is vital as organizations navigate the complexities of an evolving job market.  Moreover, 86% of Indian workers believe that companies should prioritize training and upskilling existing employees before hiring externally for various roles. This perspective highlights a growing recognition of the importance of developing internal talent to meet organizational needs.

The integration of AI technologies has yielded significant productivity improvements for Indian employees, with an average of 78 minutes saved each day—a stark contrast to Finland’s 37 minutes. This enhancement in efficiency not only benefits individual workers but also contributes to broader organizational productivity. However, the report reveals challenges as well. While 32% of Indian employees have received training on utilizing AI at work, the highest percentage is seen in China at 44%, with Japan trailing at 10%. This suggests an opportunity for Indian companies to enhance training initiatives to ensure employees are equipped to leverage AI effectively. The findings also highlight concerns about employee well-being, with 54% of Indian workers reporting burnout from excessive workloads in the past year. This figure is indicative of a larger trend seen globally, necessitating a focus on work-life balance and mental health support in the workplace. Interestingly, 76% of Indian workers express confidence in their employers' leadership teams, believing they possess the necessary AI skills and knowledge to navigate associated risks and opportunities. In contrast, only 22% of Japanese workers share this confidence, pointing to a potential area for improvement in leadership development.

The Adecco Group’s Global Workforce of the Future Report 2024 provides a comprehensive overview of the current state and future potential of the Indian workforce amidst the rise of AI. As organizations continue to adapt, the emphasis on training, employee support, and addressing concerns around AI will be crucial for fostering a resilient and future-ready workforce.
