Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and Micron have forged a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bolstering India's semiconductor industry and enhancing the electronics ecosystem. The collaboration is expected to spur innovation, cultivate a skilled workforce, drive technological research, offer practical learning opportunities for students, enhance recruitment efforts, and provide industry-relevant training.
Under the agreement, the Micron Semiconductor Lab will play a pivotal role in equipping IIT Roorkee with essential technical expertise, processes, and resources. Through initiatives such as student internships, fellowships, specialised master's and doctoral programs, and an enriched curriculum, the lab will emphasise the significance of local technical knowledge. Additionally, the partnership will involve the establishment of a dedicated physical laboratory and a team of professors committed to mentoring students closely in their technical development.
The MoU, signed by K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, and Anand Ramamoorthy, Managing Director at Micron India, marked the commencement of the collaboration, followed by the inauguration of the Micron Semiconductor Lab at the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IIT Roorkee.
As part of Micron's University Research Alliance (URAM) outreach, this initiative aligns with the objectives of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). Ramamoorthy expressed gratitude for the support and collaboration from the alumni class of 1996, emphasising the personal significance of the initiative as an alumnus of the institution.
In parallel efforts, the IIT Roorkee class of 1996 has pledged to sponsor the prestigious "Rahul Aggarwal-96 Chair" at the institute, named after alumnus Rahul Aggarwal. Supported by industry and academia, this chair will facilitate research and academic initiatives of the Micron Semiconductor Lab, focusing on chip design, technology, modeling, characterization, and product development.
Director of IIT Roorkee, K.K. Pant, reiterated the institution's commitment to driving technological advancements and shaping India's semiconductor landscape. With the support of esteemed alumni, IIT Roorkee aims to realize the vision of a developed Bharat by 2047, as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Modi.
