Building Synergy Between Skills And Business

There is a symbiotic relationship between skills and business, and it is imperative to emphasise the transformative power of resilience and humility.

Dr Annurag Batra, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief, BW Businessworld and Founder, Exchange4media said, “Skills and business normally go hand in hand. If you have the right skill you can make an impact through business and social impact initiatives.”

Talking about the respective journeys that people have in life, he specified that he hasn’t come across anyone who has done well in life and has not struggled. “People who don’t share their stories – it may have not occurred to them, would not have got an appropriate platform or would have consciously chosen to stay private.”

Batra reiterated, “Everyone goes through crests and troughs, and equanimity is the way of life. Covid has shown us that we are very resilient. We all survived – there was some divine involvement.”

He added that he usually struggles with time – he prioritises his work, his family and his parents. “Time is the biggest currency. Money is not.”

Quoting the lyrics of Madonna’s popular song, ‘Living in a Material World’ he affirmed that we do live in a material world, and to say that we don’t would be incorrect. “But at the same time, you can choose to do something which is non-materialistic - giving your time is one of them and investing in people is one of them.”

Batra stressed keeping egos away, “Egos spoil relationships, they spoil businesses.”

It’s the three C’s that he works on avoiding. “First is complaining. Don’t complain. You're alive. You're doing well. Choose not to talk about negative things - if you believe in the Law of Attraction or The Secret.”

He highlighted criticism as the second C, to be away from. “Don’t criticise. Till many years back, it used to affect me about what others spoke about me. Now, it doesn’t matter to me.”

Comparison, as the third C, needs to be avoided too, he said. “Everyone has their journey, so don’t compare.”

The BW chief also said he believed in working on the three H’s – Hard work, Hope and Humility.

Speaking at the Skills India Business event which was held at the India International Centre on 6 April, 2024, Batra wrapped up by stating, “Choose to be kind. Be nice. Everything else will follow.”
