Google on Friday announced that it will be laying off at least 12,000 employees as a part of a large-scale restructuring.
Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO was seen taking ownership of this harsh decision. The news of the layoffs befell upon the employees over a formal mail y the CEO.
Off the lot, there was an 8-month pregnant woman, Program manager Katherine Wong, who was about to commence her maternity leave soon. And to her shock, she suddenly found that she was also amongst the laid-off lot at Google.
She took her anger to LinkedIn where she disclosed that even after giving a 'positive performance review,' she was put in the list of those 12,000 employees who were just asked to leave overnight.
"The first thought that came to my mind was "Why me? Why now?". It was hard to process and digest, especially the news that came after a positive performance review. As a PgM, my first instinct was to make a plan, but clearly, this is one of the most difficult projects I have ever handled as the timing is really bad. It is almost impossible for me to look for a job as a 34-week pregnant and right about to go on maternity leave for months," Katherine Wong wrote.
She further explained how she has been toiling hard to stay normal as she is about to give birth to a young life and even applauded for her team's constant check on her well-being. Though she wishes to be able to #opentowork. But, looking at the practicality the program manager has decided to lay focus on the last bit of her pregnancy journey and want to being this new life safe and sound.
Further, Google has announced that the affected employees will get six months of healthcare, job placement services, and immigration support.
