“A Leader Should Embody Evolving Nature," Rupal Jain

BW People Exceptional Managers Awards 2024 (Exceptional Compliance Manager) winner interview with Rupal Jain, Deputy Vice President - Compliance, IIFL Finance

How do you balance empathy and accountability as a leader when guiding your team through challenges and opportunities?
For me open communication is essential. I make it a priority and invest time to understand the issues, listen to my team's concerns and encourage sharing solutions. Together, we develop a roadmap and regularly reassess our progress. Transparency and collaboration are crucial. When employees are part of discussions, they feel involved and understand the reasons behind decisions, they naturally step up to take accountability. This not only promotes accountability but also cultivates a strong sense of commitment among team members.

How can leaders ensure continuous learning and development opportunities for the team members to enhance their skills and stay relevant in a rapidly evolving workplace?
Leaders can ensure continuous learning and development opportunities by fostering a culture of growth and empowerment. I encourage my team members to set personal development goals and help them to align them with team objectives. This approach not only promotes individual growth but also strengthens team cohesion and performance. Additionally, providing constructive feedback helps identify areas for improvement and fosters personal and professional growth.
Apart from providing access to training programmes, workshops and mentorship opportunities, I believe, leaders should lead by example by investing in their own development. Create an environment that values learning and innovation to ensure your team stays relevant in a rapidly evolving workplace.

What leadership qualities do you believe are most important for driving team success, especially in today's dynamic business environment?
In today’s fast-paced business world, successful leadership demands a dynamic approach. Being adaptable and evolving alongside the team is key. We need to stay flexible to navigate through the ever-changing landscape effectively. Clear and transparent communication is fundamental to build trust and ensures everyone is on the same page. Empathy also plays a vital role, especially during tough times, as understanding and supporting team members is also essential.
I believe a leader should embody an evolving and strategising nature. Continuous strategising is important to anticipate and address challenges and opportunities proactively. And let’s not forget resilience; it’s what keeps us going despite setbacks and uncertainties. So, a blend of adaptability, communication, empathy, strategic thinking and resilience fuels team success in today’s business environment.
