Sharda University concludes three-day workshop on cryptology

Whether it’s for instant messaging apps, online banking, or military forces, secure communication has gained paramount importance in today’s digitized world. Cryptology, the art and science of secure communication, applies complex mathematics and logic to design strong encryption methods that protect the integrity, authentication, and confidentiality of information. In an attempt to protect data from misuse and to ensure its safety in cyberspace, the Research and Technology Development Center (RTDC) of Sharda University along with Cryptology Research Society of India concluded the workshop, ‘National Instructional Workshop in Cryptology’ (NIWC-2017) held from 6th to 8th October 2017. The workshop aimed to enhance the working skills of students, researchers, designers, and developers of crypto products.

The three-day workshop focused on theoretical and practical aspects of technology, practice, management and policy issues that are pertinent for cryptography users and developers. The security apparatus of networks need to be updated at regular intervals to safeguard communication from insecure channels and protect them from powerful third-party adversaries, one of the main challenges of modern cryptography. Some of the broad areas of discussion included topics such as Role of Number Theory and Algebra in Symmetric and Asymmetric Key Cryptography, Basic Cryptanalysis, Cryptographic Protocols, Security Analysis, Security Audits and Hacking, Public Key Encryption and Digital Signature.

Commenting on the workshop, Prof. Shri Kant Ojha, Sharda University said, “The world runs on cryptography today. People conduct electronic transactions every day, and, the chances of data theft or unauthorized use of data is extremely high. Browsing on the Internet, sending an e-mail, purchasing from an online store, connecting to a social network or withdrawing money from an ATM are done on a regular basis; but, what if someone could easily access your personal emails or conversations and conduct money transactions from your credit card without your knowledge? Cryptography restricts such illegal data use and secures the personal data of the customers ensuring complete privacy. Therefore, through this workshop, we aimed to address the challenges in safeguarding information and educating participants to make use of various robust algorithms to patch susceptible threats.”

The workshop targeted towards students, faculty members, scientists, researchers and those who are working in cryptography, cyber security and related areas. Teachers, research scholars, PG students of Physics/Mathematics /Engineering, of some of the leading recognized institutions attended the workshop.
