More than 12,000 employees of the State Bank of India (SBI) fell victim to a massive data breach incident, with their data leaked on Telegram channels. The sensitive data included the employee’s personal information, such as SBI passbooks, names, addresses, phone numbers, and PAN card numbers.
The leaked data file appeared on Telegram channels through the handle @sbi_data, containing the personal data of more than twelve thousand SBI employees on 8 July.
The file was named ‘SBI Employee Data Dump’ and the channel’s bio read ‘Spread Chaos Comrades!’. With more than 600 subscribers at the time of the leak, the file was quickly shared across other social media and Telegram channels.
The threat profile claims to have access to financial information including account numbers, PINs, and transaction history of millions of SBI consumers dumped across several publicly accessible leak forums.
The leaked data is reportedly put up for sale on dark web platforms.
The Telegram platform has become a den of frequent data breaches and illicit communication activities in the past few years, also involved in several high-profile cases.
