More than 40 employees, all above the age of 55, have filed a case against Indian Railways in West Bengal's Howrah. This is against a transfer order that will lead to salary cuts, complete relocation, pulling off week-long 12 hour day shifts immediately followed by night.
The tribunal court has had three hearings, all in favour of employees but none of them have been able to resume work in Howrah. Presiding officer has, on multiple occasions, refused to do anything about the constant requests from employees, including a specially-abled person.
Final hearing on the matter is scheduled for 15 June. However, most employees have no hope and are preparing to file for voluntary retirement 3-5 years before time.
Last year, a similar Indian Railways transfer order was challenged by a different set of employees in court. While they had won the case, this lot has little hope left.
Advocate Brun Chatterjee has been fighting the case jn favour of employees.
