National Employment Survey to be delayed as pandemic stalls data collection for key surveys

The Union Government has stalled data collection on four key surveys on migrants, domestic workers, and jobs created by the transport sector and professionals as the second wave of Corona Virus continues to ravage across the country. The delay would impact the release of the National Employment Policy which borrows from the data in these surveys. The recently passed labour codes in the Parliament and the national jobs and social-economic survey are important to the formulation of the National Employment Policy.

The suspension is due to the restrictions on movement across the nation during the current crisis and the fear of the virus which will hinder the public from entertaining the surveyors.

The employment policy was expected to be rolled out by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in December 2021, following the implementation of the labour codes and the completion of the surveys on domestic and migrant workers, as well as jobs created by the transport sector and professionals by October.

As of now, only a Quarterly Employment Survey will be conducted online and will be expanded to include the effect of the pandemic on Jobs in the country and is expected to be released in two months.
