How EC Group Is Addressing The Reskilling Challenge Through Its CAMEL Initiative

In December 2022, the advent of generative AI brought about a significant upturn in the technological landscape, particularly within the business space. As the impact of AI tools became increasingly apparent, the need for upskilling and reskilling emerged as a pressing concern. HR professionals faced the challenge of motivating employees to embrace this new technological revolution, navigate the influx of AI tools, and prepare for potential disruptions. 

The Need for Reskilling and Upskilling Amid AI Transformation

With the rise of AI technologies, a mix of excitement and uncertainty regarding the future of work arose. Employees were eager to understand how to remain relevant and thrive in this evolving landscape. However, the influx of new AI tools and technologies added to the challenge, leaving individuals wondering where and how to start their upskilling journey. Upskilling enables employees to enhance their existing skill sets, embrace new technologies, and take on higher-value tasks. Reskilling, on the other hand, empowers individuals to transition into new roles that align with emerging opportunities. The CAMEL Initiative

In response to these challenges, our organization developed the #100DaysLearnathon initiative called CAMEL (Concise AI ML Exploratory Learning). This program aimed to create a supportive learning environment and foster interest and awareness about the transformative power of AI. The initiative consisted of daily 15-minute learning sessions where employees could share their experiences, insights, and discoveries related to AI tools, machine learning algorithms, and other AI applications.

Broad Participation and Knowledge Sharing

The CAMEL initiative quickly gained popularity, with the first 50 days' slots filling up rapidly. The sessions attracted diverse presenters, including senior architects and freshly hired engineers. This inclusive approach encouraged employees at all levels to actively participate and contribute. As the program progressed, the organization celebrated its 100th-day milestone, marking the completion of the Learnathon with resounding success.

Benefits of the Learnathon: The Learnathon yielded numerous benefits, both for individual employees and the organization as a whole:

  1. Overcoming Fear and Building Confidence: The Learnathon played a vital role in alleviating fear and uncertainty surrounding the technological shift. By providing a platform for employees to explore AI tools, ask questions, and share their experiences, the initiative created a sense of camaraderie and confidence. Employees realized they were not alone in their journey, fostering a positive mindset and an eagerness to learn.
  1. Awareness and Adoption of AI Tools: Through the Learnathon, employees became increasingly aware of the vast array of AI tools available. The daily sessions highlighted different applications, features, and benefits of various tools, enabling individuals to delve deeper into their functionalities. This newfound knowledge-empowered employees to incorporate AI tools into their day-to-day work, enhancing productivity and efficiency.
  1. Enhanced Customer Interactions: As employees gained a deeper understanding of AI technologies, they became better equipped to understand customer needs and propose suitable AI solutions. This heightened expertise instilled confidence in customers as they witnessed firsthand the organization's commitment to staying abreast of technological advancements. The ability to offer tailored AI solutions further strengthened customer relationships and trust.
