Govt Allows 730-Days Childcare Leave To Single Male, Female Employees

Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, announced on Wednesday that both male and female government employees are now eligible for 730 days of childcare leave.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, the minister stated that the female government servants and single male government servants appointed to civil services and posts in connection with Union affairs are eligible for child care leave (CCL) under Rule 43-C of the Central Civil Services (Leave) Rules, 1972 for a maximum period of seven hundred and thirty days during the entire service for taking care of two eldest surviving children up to the age of 18 years and no age limit in case of differently-abled child,.

The Ministry of Personnel stated in March 2022 that female government employees were entitled for 730 days of CCL for no more than three stints in a calendar year. The CCL can be extended up to six times in a calendar year for a single government employee. Except in extraordinary conditions, CCL cannot be granted during a government employee's probation period, according to regulations.

According to the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961, a woman is entitled to at least six months (180 days) of maternity leave following her pregnancy, which can be extended for up to 45 days in the event of an abortion or miscarriage.

Male employees are allowed to 15 days off within six months of giving birth or adopting a child. Fathers having fewer than two surviving children or adopting a kid under the age of a year can take 15 days of paternity leave within six months after the adoption.
