Google ropes in Karan Bhatia as their head of Global policy

As its new Global Head of Policy, Google has appointed Karan Bhatia to take forward the company's policy discussions around key issues such as AI, job creation and infrastructure.

“We’re thrilled to hire someone with Karan’s impressive experience in global policy. He’s a widely respected leader who will work with our teams to advocate for policies that encourage growth and innovation.” Said Kent Walker, Google’s Senior Vice President of Global Affairs and Chief Legal Officer.

Bhatia’s primary focus will be handling regulatory backlash that comprises of antitrust investigations and new digital-privacy rules. Bhatia will be reporting to Walker.

Since last September, this position has been vacant, after Caroline Atkinson, a former Obama official, stepped down.

 “This is an incredible opportunity to join such an exciting company in a fast-moving industry. I’m looking forward to contributing across a range of products that people use every day, and to important policy debates.” Said Karan Bhatia, while giving his statement.

Previously, Karan Bhatia worked at GE, joined in 2008. He was the President of GE's Government Affairs and Policy function, managing more than 100 employees.

 Bhatia was in charge of US international trade policies with Asia and Africa as a deputy representative under the Bush administration

He is also a Columbia Law School graduate.

With Google, Bhatia will be dealing with a range of domestic policy matters, comprising of privacy and cybersecurity.

With the hardest one being in Europe, wherein the EU is anticipated to rule soon on its antitrust case against Google’s Android mobile operating system.
