The Goa state government has increased the minimum wages by Rs 100 for the manufacturing, hospitality, construction, hospitals and retail sectors. The wages have been revised from Rs 407 to Rs 570 per day based on the skill set and seniority of the worker.
The department for labour and employment shared that the increase in minimum rates of wages payable has been done after the advice from advisory board.
The decision allows any employment in the sectors of commercial enterprises, construction units, industrial establishments and pharma units engaged on commercial, manufacturing and service activities will be paid Rs 523 per day for clerical and skill-based jobs while the highly skilled workers will be paid a minimum wage of Rs 565 per day.
It also allows the policy to be completely transparent and inclusive as the male, female and transgender workers shall be paid the same rates of the revised wages.
There has also been a revision in the variable dearness allowance (VDA), which has been increased by Rs 105, bringing the amount to Rs 512 per day.
The state of Goa offers the highest minimum wage and yet, the unions had rejected the decision. The All India Trade Union Congress believes that the revision is much less than the expected demand. The union further believes that the interests of the workers have not been considered while taking the decision.
