GCC Contract Workers Seek Fair Pay And Regularisation Of Service

The contractual workers in the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) seek regularisation of service and fair pay.

The conservancy workers on contract are unable to access insurance coverage, provident fund, safety kits, and paid leaves. The workers are also worried about the risk of termination without any prior notice.

A permanent conservancy worker with GCC earns up to 23 thousand per month, as compared to temporary workers early only up to 12 thousand a month.

Under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), approximately 3,800 people were employed on contract.

The contractual workers are worried about making ends meet and are undertaking multiple jobs to provide stability to their families.

Mayor R Priya, shared that all the corporations in Tamil Nadu are planning on framing new policies which could be implemented across the state corporations. She also stated that the workers are clearly informed about their temporary services in their contracts.

Effective from April 2023, GCC has upgraded the workers’ pay from 424 to 522 under NULM.
