Delhi HC Slams MCD Over Salary Delays
The Delhi High Court criticised the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for failing to fulfil its financial commitments to its present and former employees, including the payment of salary, pensions, and arrears.
A Division Bench comprised of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora stated that the salaries, pensions, and arrears owed to employees are fundamental payments, and if the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) continues to fail to meet its obligations, the Court may consider ordering the municipal corporation's dissolution.
The bench emphasised in its order that the need to pay wages, pensions and arrears in accordance with the seventh pay commission is a statutory duty. The panel warned that if the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) fails to satisfy its commitment, it will face consequences.
MCD Standing Counsel Divya Prakash Pande assured the Court that the employees' pay and pensions would be distributed within ten days. Pande also stated that he would seek advice on pending debts. The MCD has successfully reduced pending payments from nearly ₹1,000 crore to ₹400 crore through continuous initiatives.
