BMC Paid 2 Crore in Salaries 63 ‘Idle’ Employees

It was revealed that BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation BMC is giving salaries to about 63 inspectors for not doing anything for almost three years.

Apparently, employees in question were at the department head quarter in Dadar Bombay and instructed to remain ‘ideal’ as a punishment

Rs 2 crore have been spent on these ideal employees over a couple of years. Mumbai union has demanded the action be taken against the officers responsible for this wastage of resources and BMC finances.

Inspectors who fail to fulfill their duties were sent to the headquarters in 2017 where police inspectors were told to sit ideal for the whole day.

As if that wasn’t enough, additional manpower was sought from the Shops and Establishments wing to fulfill the shortage of manpower in the Licensing Department, According to reports, This resulted in an RTI being filed to question and seek justification.

Even though none of them worked sum of two crores was spent on salaries given to them since 2017

There are questions being raised about the nature of punishment as the employees who were at fault could have been punished by cutting salaries all leaves instead they were allowed to rest and sit ‘ideal and paying them salaries.

It is no secret that the licensing department has no dearth of work. As it is the body that looks into unauthorized trade and occupation and is responsible to take action against hawkers and peddlers who occupy footpaths in legally or set up shop outside school railway stations and hospitals.
