The Bihar government has taken strict action by terminating 70 health department workers amid irregularities in their appointments. The employees pertained to the Muzzafarpur district. Among those terminated, 40 were retired employees and as a consequence, their pension was revoked.
The dismissal from service was done on an immediate basis, following a court order. The headquarters of the state health department was also intimated while implementing the action to ensure transparency in the department.
According to Umesh Chandra Sharma, Civil Surgeon, out of the total 70 terminated employees, only 22 employees were working, while five of them had died during their service. The pensions of the forty retired employees had been terminated with immediate effect. The status of the remaining three people remains unclear.
The irregularities in the appointment were discovered for a total of 358 employees across the state health department between 1980 and 1990. The move of termination will be an indication towards efficiency, transparency and accountability in crucial public sector departments.
