With an intent to bridge the gap of unemployment in India, Awign - India’s largest on-demand work fulfilment platform, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Logistics Sector Skill Council (LSSC), an organization set up by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) through National Skill Development Corporation of India. The collaboration aims to fulfill the demand-supply gap in the logistics sector and create a conducive ecosystem which aids employment for jobseekers.
As part of the MOU, Logistics Sector Skill Council will facilitate sourcing of skilled candidates pan-India through its existing database, by organizing job fairs with the support of District Skill Committees, ASEEM job portal of NSDC and placement portal of Logistics Sector Skill Council. Awign will share the requirement of workforce across locations with Logistics Sector Skill Council and fulfill the gig workforce requirement for the fast-growing logistics sector in India.
According to a report by NITI Ayog, India's gig economy might witness $250 billion in transactions by the end of the next decade, or 1.25 percent of the GDP. In the future, opportunities in the gig economy are most likely to arise in the following four industry sectors: construction, manufacturing, retail, and transportation & logistics.
Sharing his thoughts on the joint initiative, Annanya Sarthak, CEO & Co-Founder, Awign, said, “As India’s largest work fulfilment platform, we are committed to providing livelihood opportunities for unemployed and underemployed workers across the country and ultimately, boosting India’s economic growth. The partnership with the Logistics Sector Skill Council will create a gateway for workers to secure employment opportunities and industry experience with leading companies across the logistics sector along with uplifting the lives of countless people.”
Speaking on the same, Mr. Ravikanth Yamarthy, CEO, Logistics Sector Skill Council, said “It is estimated that the size of the Indian logistics market would grow from $ 250 billion in 2021 to $ 380 billion by 2025, at a compound annual growth rate between 10 to 12 percent. The logistics sector would be one of the largest employing sectors, especially in e-commerce, which in turn will support the growth of other sub-sectors of warehousing land transportation, courier, and express while the largest gig force would be employed in these subsectors. We are sure that organizations like Awign, facilitating employment of gig workers will give more impetus to the growth of the logistics sector.”
In the next five years, Awign aims to increase its gig partner network to add 500,000+ annually active gig partners to achieve 300,000,000+ tasks. With this initiative, Awign takes another step to solve the challenge of India’s unemployment.
