X Ordered To Pay 5 Crore To Former Employee In Unfair Dismissal Case

Rooney, who worked at Twitter's Ireland unit since 2013, was let go in December 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company

Twitter, now rebranded as X, has been ordered to pay €550,000 (around ₹5 crore) in compensation to Gary Rooney, a former employee, after being found guilty of unfair dismissal. Rooney, who worked at Twitter's Ireland unit since 2013, was let go in December 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company. The decision came after Musk issued an ultimatum to employees, demanding they commit to working "long hours at high intensity" or accept severance.

Rooney did not respond to the ultimatum, leading to his termination. X argued that Rooney had voluntarily resigned, but the Irish Workplace Relations Commission ruled in Rooney's favor. The commission stated that large companies like Twitter should not treat employees in such a manner. The €550,000 compensation is the highest award ever granted by the commission, reflecting the severity of the case.

This ruling comes after Musk's controversial acquisition of Twitter in October 2022 for $44 billion, which led to significant staff layoffs and restructuring within the company.
