Recently Narayan Murthy was asked if Artificial intelligence posed a threat to human jobs. To which, he responded with an emphatic 'no.' According to Murthy, the human mind is much more flexible and adapts quickly. AI, in his view, will only supplement the human mind to solve bigger and more complex problems.
On the contrary, Geoffrey Hinton, one of the pioneering brains behind the evolution of AI, has resigned from Google, fearing the risks associated with the evolution of AI.
Although AI language models like ChatGPT have been designed to assist humans in tasks related to natural language processing, the general fear has been that they will take over routine jobs. And there is good reason to believe in the proposition. A study by OpenAI, Open Research, and the University of Pennsylvania had in March 2023 revealed that jobs requiring proficiency in programming and writing are at the risk of being automated. Besides this, major tech companies like IBM have reportedly indicated to the possibility of doing away with certain routine jobs in the coming years.
Hinton's worry goes a step further as he envisions a future when AI models will get evolved to the extent of writing their own code. He has stepped down from his role at Google to reportedly speak about the dangers of AI.
As the race between Google and Microsoft intensifies to evolve and augment AI and tech, only time can tell, whether AI will take over the routine tasks or aid newer employment options and problem-solving capabilities. One thing is certain though, the development is a disruptive force to reckon with and has got everyone talking about it.
