In a recent internal audit by Uniqlo Australia, a fashion retailer, several underpayment issues were brought to light. These issues pertained over seven long years.
The company witnessed several errors in the calculation of wages and superannuation payments between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2022. Addressing an affected employee’s email, Uniqlo shared that they are conducting a remediation program concerning their compliance with the General Retail Industry Award for retail operations.
The Japan-headquartered company found the underpayment issues by reviewing the employment compliance standards within their rostering process and the company’s payroll system.
Uniqlo Australia is actively working towards assessing and rectifying the discrepancy, agreeing to the underpayments as a genuine oversight on their part. Furthermore, they have decided to work with external auditors to revise their HR and payroll system.
The company is collaborating with Fair Work Ombudsman, an Australian agency responsible for workplace law compliance to review the situation and rectify the errors.
Even though the exact number of workers affected was not disclosed, the company has apologised to their former employees impacted by these discrepancies. To ensure fair and compliant practices in the future, the company has committed to improving its internal systems and rectifying past mistakes.
