Toshiba Corp. is reportedly intending to trim its workforce in Japan by 5,000 employees, equating to roughly 10 per cent of its total headcount, as per a Nikkei report. This proposed move signifies a departure from Japan's historical reluctance to layoffs, indicating a shift in mindset amid ongoing labor shortages in the country.
If realised, this measure would represent one of the largest workforce reduction efforts in Japan this year. The Tokyo-based company aims to streamline its operations by downsising noncore businesses. Consequently, Toshiba expects to face a one-time cost of approximately ¥100 billion (₹5,400 crore), according to the report.
