Eric Yuan, Founder & CEO of video conferencing startup Zoom Technologies, who earlier worked with US-based web conferencing startup WebEx (acquired by CISCO in 2007), realized that the customers were not happy with the communication experience. Stating the motive behind starting Zoom, he said at the recent India Internet Day event: “The goal is simple – to build better service. And, bring happiness to people.”
India Internet Day 2020 (virtual) event happened during the India Internet Day on August 7th and 8th organized by TiE Delhi-NCR in association with 10Times. The first day saw the participation of esteemed industry speakers in the field of healthcare, commerce, education, among others. The second day had discussions surrounding the status of SMEs in the country.
Speaking about his company’s success this year, Yuan shared some important lessons that he learned along the way. He said, “The key is to look at everything no matter what you do. Listen to your customers closely - why they use our services or why they don’t use our services.”
Moreover, on how this pandemic period has been, Yuan said that the pandemic has completely changed our ‘user-based dynamics’. He stated that the company took it upon themselves as corporate social responsibility, and offering free services to a lot of K-12 schools across the world. Yuan informed, "We have a global data center and we have given customers a flexible network routing functionality. Meaning, they can decide which country's data centre they want to use and which they don't."
Speaking to Rajan Anandan, MD- Surge & Sequoia Capital India LLP, President – TiE Delhi-NCR, Yuan shared: “I trusted my gut feeling and followed my dream and did that.” The second challenge he shared in building start-ups is finding a balance between speed and patience. Yuan believes sometimes you need to grow really fast and other times you need to take a step back and think about the long term. Adding to that, the last challenge that is faced, Yuan shared, is maintaining the company culture. “When we talk about culture we talk about in terms of delivering happiness.”
