Nokia announced on Tuesday that Tarun Chhabra has been named as the new head of Nokia India. This leadership transition occurs at a time when the corporation is suffering difficult market conditions and has declared plans to decrease its global staff by 11,000 to 14,000 workers, Moneycontrol said. The strategic change attempts to improve operational efficiency and respond to changing market conditions.
Chhabra, who was previously the head of mobile networks and senior vice president at Nokia, will begin his new post in April 2024. He succeeds Sanjay Malik, who has led Nokia's Indian market operations for nearly eight years.
Chhabra's responsibilities will include controlling the Indian market and managing the mobile networks group's operations in India, while reporting to Nokia's president of Mobile Networks, Tommi Uitto.
The reorganisation process in India began after the global announcement in October and lasted until the end of December. Some staff were asked to resign, while others opted for voluntary departures owing to role changes. Severance packages were issued to impacted employees to help them move out of the organisation.
The exact number of layoffs in India has not been announced, but global job cuts are expected to reduce Nokia's costs by up to €1.2 billion (almost $1.3 billion) by the end of 2026.
