Macy’s announced on Thursday that it plans to hire over 31,500 full- and part-time employees for the upcoming holiday season, fewer than the number hired in previous years, as the U.S. department store chain prepares for the busy shopping period.
Last year, Macy’s recruited about 38,000 seasonal employees, down from the 41,000 workers hired in 2022.
A separate forecast from Deloitte indicated that U.S. holiday sales this year are expected to grow at their slowest rate in six years, as ongoing inflation and dwindling savings push shoppers to become more cautious with their spending during the key retail season.
Holiday sales typically account for more than half of U.S. retailers' annual revenue, making this a critical period for the industry.
Meanwhile, UPS announced that it plans to hire 1,25,000 workers for the holiday shipping season—an increase from the 100,000 hired last year—to better meet anticipated customer demand.
In a statement, UPS said, “The year-over-year increase in our seasonal hiring allows us to be even more confident that we will meet anticipated customer needs.”
