The Los Angeles Times earlier this week announced layoffs amounting to 20 percent of the newsroom, i.e. 115 employees.
The layoff exercise is reportedly the largest in the newspaper's 143-year history.
Taking to microblogging website X, Matt Pearce, President of the Media Guild of the West, said that the layoff exercise will hit many departments and clusters across the newsroom.
"This total, while devastating, is nonetheless far lower than the number of layoffs the Bargaining Committee was expecting last week," he said.
