"Initially, India's Focus Was More On Labour Welfare:" TV Rao

Human resources is the most important part of any organisation. It is always a challenge for the organisation to make employees feel valued and for this, they use various tools and practices. So its important to understand the evolving HR practices in India from the last seventy-five years and future ahead.

TV Rao, Chairman, TV Rao Learning System on Monday said that during the 1950s India's focus was more on Labour welfare as they are the backbone of all companies. The focus was on making sure that employees have a good living, environment, health, and insurance so they can give their best to the company. But during the late 1960s, emphasis was on personal management and training and development.

"Two bodies were set up in the early 1950s one on Personnel management and the other on Labour management both of them were merged by the 1980s and formed the National Institute of Personnel Management. These bodies were very active in Industrial relation matter and Personnel Management matters, before their merger. Whereas during 1969 Indian society for training and development was conceptualised in Bombay and in 1986-87 we started National HRD Network. History of all these bodies are very important in the growth and development of Human Resources in India," said Rao.

He further added that in 1977 HR function was conceptualised as three things Human resource development, Personnel administration and last is worker affairs. Human resource management is a broad umbrella that consists of focal umbrellas in which the most important part is Industrial leadership where communication plays a very important role and another is Maslow's hierarchy of needs where you take care of the basic needs of your employees.
