Discord Lays Off 17% Workforce

Discord, a famous messaging service used by gamers, has acknowledged the layoff of 170 employees, accounting for 17 per cent of its workforce, according to CNBC. This news follows a previous decrease of approximately 40 positions in August, which is consistent with a trend of corporations implementing layoffs early in the new year.

Discord CEO Jason Citron stated in an internal memo that these layoffs are important to improve the company's productivity, particularly following a significant recruiting boom in 2020. The Verge, the first to report on the job losses, provided details from Citron's memo. Discord employed 870 employees in August.

In his email to employees, Citron stated that Discord's headcount increased too quickly in recent years, an admission that has become customary among startup CEOs.

The job cuts add to the ongoing layoffs in the technology industry, which have included major cuts at Google and Amazon just this week.
