Mark Zuckerberg Explains Ongoing Tech Layoffs
Mark Zuckerberg has a theory on why tech layoffs aren't going down. Companies are realising that, while painful, there are advantages to becoming "leaner."
In an interview with Morning Brew Daily's podcast, published Friday, the Meta CEO stated that businesses are still adjusting to the post-pandemic era. In a wide-ranging discussion, he discussed competition with Apple, among other issues.
"In terms of layoffs and stuff like that, I actually think that was more due to companies trying to navigate Covid," Zuckerberg remarked in the interview, when asked if tech layoffs were related to the AI surge.
According to Zuckerberg, organisations are no longer reducing their workforce numbers solely to avoid overhiring; instead, they are realising that being leaner can have advantages.
While many internet companies were first hesitant to make layoffs, they realised it did not mean the end, according to Zuckerberg.
"It was obviously really tough, we parted with a lot of talented people we cared about," Zuckerberg remarked in the interview, referring specifically to Meta's previous layoffs. "But in some ways actually becoming leaner kind of makes the company more effective."
Today, firms are still concerned about efficiency, Zuckerberg stated on the Morning Brew podcast. Many are considering reorganising the organisation, flattening management levels, and moving to a smaller model.
Zuckerberg has been reducing managerial layers as part of his efficiency drive. Instagram is reducing technical programme managers, and this function is being reduced throughout Meta.
