If Not In Current Profession, I Would Have Been A Chef : Rohit Kulkarni, Payoneer

In a candid interview with BW People, Rohit talks about his motivation, biggest achoevements and best life decisions.

If not in the current Profession, you would be?

I am fascinated by driving transformation and I think I would be a Chef. I have credits to bank on. I did finish my hotel management 20 years back.

One tune you always hum?

“Nahi samjhe hai who hume to kya jata hai…hari baazi ko jitna hume aata hai…” from the movie Jo Jita Wohi Sikandar. The song gives me a feeling of elation and recharges me always.

One Book to read when you want to motivate yourselves?

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. His experiences are so surreal. I also refer to a compilation of quotes by Mahatma Gandhi. What he said decades back is still so true. My favorite one, especially since we work in a global work-space is “I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any. I refuse to live in other people’s houses as an interloper, a beggar or a slave”

One Dialogue of a movie that motivates you or you like the most?

Movie – Gravity. Character - Dr. Ryan Stone: Alright the way I see it, there's only two possible outcomes. Either I make it down there in one piece and I have one hell of a story to tell, or I burn up in the next ten minutes. Either way whichever way, no harm no foul. Cause either way, it'll be one hell of a ride. I'm ready.

This is a bit embarrassing …but probably a monkey. I can’t hold my curious instincts.

Luck or Hard Work, what do you think weighs more in defining a successful Person?

Hard work. Hard work is satisfying and gives long lasting joy.

One best decision you ever made?

Choosing to always do start up work vs. growing established businesses. I have made this decision many times in life and it has always paid rich dividends.

A strategy that you always use to take your decisions in Personal or Professional life?

I learnt about this trait of mine pretty late in life. I have a tendency to wait till the last minute to make a decision (not being late  though). I have realized there are no bonus points for taking decisions before they are required to be made.

Whose advise you seek when in dilemma?

There are many people. In personal life, my wife is a strong person who helps me make tough decisions. While growing up, I would say my elder brother. In professional life, I think I do not hesitate to ask for help. Most people have something to offer. My own domain knowledge is an assortment of many ideas from multiple minds. I can do a good job of assimilating it.

What has been your biggest achievement?

Till now – Launching Amazon.in with books category. I wish to take Payoneer to the same success in India with payments

One thing that you want to change in yourself?

Ask my wife, you will probably get a list. And her lament that I won’t change.
